George was born at Newton Kyme, near Tadcaster in 1898 to parents Joseph, a Horseman, and Elizabeth Atack, the family residing at Saint Helen's Grange Farm Cottages.
Moving to Wetherby at some stage after 1901, by 1911 the family are recorded as residing at Upper Cliffe Terrace.
